FORSU2BIO

FURSU2BIO Project

The FORSU2BIO Project, "Research in Urban Biorefinery: Valorization of Urban Waste through the Production of Bioethanol and Bioproducts" (2016-2017), focused on the techno-economic improvement of the PERSEO Bioethanol® process by developing the concept of a Biorefinery, optimizing the biotechnological process, and investigating the valorization of the process residue (vinasse) through the production of high-value bioproducts (biofertilizers, bioplastics, and biodiesel).

The main achieved results were:

  1. Enhancement of raw material refining processes and bioethanol production to achieve higher bioethanol yields.
  2. Valorization of the residual organic fraction of the process to obtain high-value bioproducts from valuable fractions (biofertilizers, bioplastics, biodiesel).
  3. Integration of processes into a biorefinery to achieve maximum overall process profitability.
  4. Validation of optimized results at a pilot scale and techno-environmental and economic study of the process.
  5. Establishment of foundations for addressing a future national or international R&D project, involving the integration of companies from other complementary industrial sectors. Specifically, companies from the energy and chemical sectors would be involved in the development of the final product, as well as potentially technology-user sectors (e.g., waste management, transportation).
